Joshua McKendree Adams was born in Halifax County, VA on July 9th of 1801. His parents were William Adams and Sarah Dawson. His grandparents were Napier 'Nipper' Adams and Lucy McKendree of Virginia. He is descended from the Adams family that lived in Somerset County, England. His 7th Great Grandfather, John Adams, immigrated to America on the Fortune, the second ship after the Mayflower to arrive at Plymouth Colony.

Joshua's middle was pronounced Mackeltree, as it sounded to his descendants, but it was likely spelled McKendree after his grandmother's last name.
Following the migrations of many people in the early part of the 19th century, Joshua Adams left Virginia to seek a new life and travel west. After obtaining adulthood at about twenty years old Joshua became restless and went to another nearby state and met and married Margaret Sexton whose family was a member of a religious sect. Joshua and Margaret migrated to Tennessee before 1830 where other relatives were living. In the next seven to ten years he and Margaret had four of their eldest children there: James, Elizabeth, Samuel Haskin, and Robert Sanford.

In December of 1833 after the Alabama territory had opened up for settlement Joshua and his family moved from Tennessee down to Pickens County Alabama to settle in the city limits of Carrollton, later moving two miles east of there. Joshua and Margaret began buying federal land grants and eventually owned 640 acres over the course of twenty years.

By 1850 Joshua and Margaret had several more children: Martha, Mary, Jane, and Jackson bringing the total to eight. Margaret passed away sometime after 1850 and it is unknown where she is buried. By 1860 Joshua Adams was getting up in years and only his children Martha, Mary, and Jackson were left in the house with him.

The Civil War passed without event for Joshua although his sons Samuel and Sanford served in the CSA and possibly James and Jackson also. After the war Joshua's son's Samuel and Robert Sanford had places nearby and were farmers and house painters. His daughter Martha had married Alfred Barksdale Cox in about 1864 and daughter Mary married Pleasant Sutton in 1866.

In 1865 Joshua, aged 64, is alone in the house and decides to marry again taking a second wife Amanda (Manda) Gannon, twenty-five years his junior. They had a daughter, Ida Witeria "Witerie", born in 1866. In 1878 Joshua took up the profession of religion as they say and joined the Methodist East Church.
Joshua lived on in Pickens County near Carrollton with Amanda and Witerie until 1884 when Witerie marries into the Cosper family and moves away. Joshua and Amanda move to his son Samuel's house near Pickensville and passes away on Dec. 6, 1887 at the age of 86 years.

Amanda buried Joshua with her family in Shady Grove Cemetery on Spring Hill road east of the community of Archer. In his obituary it was said Joshua was known for his integrity and his uprightness with everyone he met and that five of his children survived him.
