Walter Junior Dearing passed on July 12, 2008. The son of the late Charlie Taylor Dearing and Nellie Gray Calvert was born November 22, 1932. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Chelsea Gillespie Dearing; his brothers, Jewell and Cecil Dearing. He is survived by his daughters, Olivia D. Cummings and Michelle D. Hale; his grandchildren, Shannon and Johnathan Cummings; and numerous cousins and close friends. The world bled a little Salem Pride with his passage. He was raised at the Baptist Children Home in Salem, Va. He was captain of the 1950 Andrew Lewis High School Football Team. He lettered in all varsity sports his senior year. He bypassed a college football scholarship to join the Navy. He served with distinction on Destroyer Escort Duty from 1951 to 1953. After his honorable discharge, he was employed as a train engineer with Norfolk and Western until his retirement. He was a Master Mason with the Taylor Lodge in Salem. He survived battles with cancer and heart disease to enjoy his passions of Salem High School Football and his grandchildren. He never turned his back on a friend and he loved Salem to a fault. A family graveside service at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem reunited him with his wife and high school classmates. He will be missed. John M. Oakey and Son, Salem is in charge of the arrangements.
