Born c.1678, Samuel Wheeler died in "Ye 84th Year of his age". His brown sandstone stele features a pear-faced, winged soul effigy in its tympanum, a gentler funerary image than the grim death's heads of the earlier colonial years. It appears to have been made by Boston carver William Grant, who moved to New York, and then to New Jersey during the 1740's, where he remained active into the 1790's. Much of his work, which features pear-faced soul effigies, is in the Presbyterian churchyards of Orange and Woodbridge, NJ.
