Benjamin F. Banta was 21, and living in Gosport, Marion Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Private in Co. E, 8th Iowa Infantry, on Aug 13, 1861. He was mustered into federal service on Sept 4, 1861. He mustered out of the service with his regiment on April 20, 1866, at Selma, Alabama.

Banta was wounded during the battle of Shiloh on April 6, 1862.

He applied for his Civil War pension on Dec 22, 1866. His application is #120,343, and his certificate #81,284. After his death, his wife, Tabitha, applied for her widow's pension on Oct 16, 1922. Her application is #1,195,553, and her certificate #924,632.
