Mary Ann was the daughter of Samuel Mills and Pheriba Gwynn (also spelled Guinn) Scroggins, the sixth of ten children, born in 1834 in Fentress County, Tennessee. It was in Fentress County that she married Michael Moody, in June of 1849. They had eight children, Samuel A., Peter M., William L, James A., John, Margaret J., Thomas S., and Arkansas Paralee "Arkey Lee". In around 1860 or so Michael and Polly, as Mary was always called, moved from Fentress County to Texas and then to Arkansas. Michael maintained property in both states for years, in Wise Co., Texas, and Carroll Co., Arkansas, and we find Mary and the kids living in Texas in December of 1861, in Arkansas in 1869, and again in Texas in 1880. Michael died while driving cattle from Carroll Co. to Wise Co. in the early 1880's, and management of the Arkansas property eventually passed to Tom, while most of the rest of the family stayed in Texas. Polly never remarried and lived the rest of her life with one kid or another, eventually staying after about 1902 with Lee and her husband, Peter Laritson, in Texico, New Mexico, and then in Quay, New Mexico. She died in 1913, in Quay.

Polly passed away before my mother, her granddaughter Ora Ila Moody Creech, was born, but Mom did remember hearing that Polly would show up at a relative's house and nobody knew when she arrived if she was going to stay overnight or for years, and that she was one to spoil grandkids pretty rotten but was mighty rough on daughters-in-law.

From Misty Tompkins: Tucumcari NewsPaper state that CB Mullins came into town July 25th to purchase a casket for grandmother Moody who died 1AM the day before. Making her DOD: July24th.

Thank you so much to Wendy Green-Swaim for her work on Polly's memorial!
Thank you to Misty Tompkins for her research on Polly's date of death.
