Susan Delia Hopkins Kern and her sister Malinda Hopkins Chambers inherited land from their father who died in 1865. When Malinda died in 1870, Susan's husband Frank became guardian of Martha Emma (b. 1858) and Ida Edith (b. 1870) Chambers and divided their mother's half into third shares for each girl and their father. By all rights Benjamin Franklin Chambers should have inherited all the land of his wife and been the natural guardian of his daughters.
