JEFFERSON, N.C. – Burton Wright Avery, 84, of Jefferson, formerly of Charlemont, Mass., died Monday in Winston Salem.
Born in North Adams, Mass., April 5, 1915, he was the son of Henry L. Sr. and Helen (Wright) Avery. He graduated from Charlemont Hight School, Deerfield (Mass.) Academy and Boston's Bentley School of Accounting and Finance.
In partnership with his brother, Henry L. Jr., Burton owned and operated A. L. Avery & Son General Merchandise in Charlemont, which their great-grandfather founded in 1861. He retired to Jefferson in 1980 after 44 years.
Avery served in the Navy during World War II. He maintained a 50-year membership in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and served nine years on the Charlemont School Committee, which formed the Hawlemont Regional School District, the first consolidated elementary school in Massachusetts.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, the former Barbara Goodwin; three sons, John and Peter of Jefferson and Kirk of Denver, Colo., a daughter, Karen Solon of Falls Church, Va., a brother, Paul of Fort Myers, Fla.; a sister, Carolyn Johnsen of Clearwater, Fla.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and 12 nieces and nephews.
A private memorial service was held Wednesday at the Boone Family Funeral Home, West Jefferson. A spring burial is planned in the Avery family plot at Arms Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations to hospice.
