Following an illness of about ten weeks, Mrs. Lawrence Dufphey died early Thursday morning at the home of her son, Leonard, in Battle creek, where she was taken about three weeks before when her condition first became alarming. For some time Mrs. Dufphey had suffered with an ailment which had not been definitely identified because its nature prohibited surgical treatment.
Vertie A. Phipps was born May 7, 1871, near Independence, Virginia, and had reached the age of 62 years, 1 month and 22 days. She came to Nebraska in 1885 and resided with her parents near Battle Creek until September 1, 1888, when she married Lawrence Dufphey. The two retired from the farm a number of years ago and for the past two or three years Mrs.Dufphey had been assisting her husband in the management of a produce and grocery store in Battle Creek
It has been remarked by many that Mrs. Dufphey lived a cheerful , helpful life; her devotion as a wife and mother, herkindness to everyone, will perpetuate her memory in a community with which she had been associated for nearly a half century.
Surviving are the husband, one son, Leonard V. of Battle Creek, and two grandchildren, Danny and Lorrayne. Three children preceded her in death, Mrs. Allie Ives of Tilden, passing away in 1918. Two sisters, Mrs. R.J. Dufphey of Haley, Idaho, and Mrs. M.R. Hackler of Battle Creek, also survive.
