MARY JANE BOWEN COZART, wife of Thornton Ellsworth Cozart. Her husband was away in the Civil War when he became ill and was sent home. At Tyler, Texas, he became too ill to continue. Word was sent to Mary Jane and she left Black Jack Grove (now Cumby) on horseback to see him. He died and she buried him at Tyler, then returned home on horseback. A month later, she gave birth to twin babies; both she and the babies died on Aug. 18, 1864 at Black Jack Grove. All three were buried at the old cemetery outside of town (Black Jack Grove, now Cumby).
