Headhunter has posted a photo of the Elijah Gilliland Family and I will attempt to identify them and place then in the family.
Back Row: Lucy Gilliland Smith: Lucy Inez Emoline Gilliland was the first of the Children, b. 23 Oct 1866, d. 8 Aug 1946 while living in the Gallant area. She first married Samuel Smith. William Gilliland was born 14 May 1887 and would have been 17 or 18 when this photo was taken. A couple of years later he married Ethel Emeline Morton, the daughter of James Wiley Morton and Artimisse Childers. The older gentleman in the middle is Elijah Benton (Eli) Gilliland; b.1842, d. 9 Aug 1906. He was 62 when this photo was taken. His wife Nancy Jane Rickles had died 8 years earlier, he outlived her by 10 years.
The three Jackson Children are Clara, b. 1901, David, b. 1903 and Faries S. b 1899.And while we are on the Jackson family go to the large boy in the middle of the middle row, that is Charles b. 1892, then Levi Veston, b. 1897, Ellen , b. 1895, The mother , Mary Elizabeth Gilliland (Jackson) b. 1871, she is holding the two week old Lenord Lincoin. She was 33 years old and all seven of these Jackson children are hers, also she lost an infant daughter Ellen in 1895. She later had Lawrence, 1908, Lucie 1910, Luther 1911, and Beulah 1914. The father used a number of different names but I have reduced the list to Squire Andrew Columbus Jackson. I think I understand why he was called "Clum" .
The first three people in the middle row are James Thomas Gilliland ,b. 7 Aug 1884, and his wife of one year, Mary Etta Morton. The next lady is 14 year old Nancy Adaline Gilliland, she seems to be keeping a distance from her 12 year old cousin James Jackson. Four years later she married John Clarence Clowdus. She lived to be 92 and died 15 June 1982 in Oneonta, Blount County,
The front row is the family of Sarah Ida Gilliland; b. 3 April 1882, d. 29 Dec 1970 and Gus John Riley Gargus; b. 9 nov 1883, d. 21 June 1964. I do not have any records on them
The reference to the missing family is Susan Huldah Gilliland and her husband Thomas Edward Washburn. They had two children by this time, Alice Laverne and Amos Vanburen. By 1922 they had an additional five sons and three daughters. The parents are buried at Bethleham
The census shows Eli B. living at Ferguson, St Clair County, Alabama in 1900, can anyone identify the location of the house in the photo?
