Memorial service for Verne W. "Mike" Atkins, 73, of Dallas, Texas, formerly of Columbus, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday by Myers Funeral Service, Hathaway-Myers Chapel, at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. David M. Liddle Jr. officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hathaway-Myers Chapel, where a Masonic memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday. Private entombment will be at Garland Brook Mausoleum.

Memorials may be made to St. John's Masonic Lodge or Bartholomew County Area Hospice.

Atkins died Tuesday at his home.

A retired independent insurance agent, Atkins owned the Mike Atkins Agency in Columbus. He retired in 1982. He had been an agent with American Family Life and Jefferson National Life companies. Atkins was a resident of Columbus for 50 years, moving to Dallas in July of 1988. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Columbus, a 50-year member of St. John's Masonic Lodge, a member of Indianapolis Valley of Scottish Rite, Murat Shrine and Columbus High 12.

Born Feb. 27, 1916, at Gadston, Atkins was the son of William and Eva Marie Sutton Atkins. He married Mary Holloway on Sept. 3, 1937. She died June 2, 1983. He married Madaleine Holloway on Sept. 30, 1983. She died July 23, 1987.

Surviving are a son, William G. Atkins of Frankfort; a daughter, Jayne M. Higgins of Dallas; a stepson, Richard Holloway of Lexington, Ky.; a stepdaughter, Judy Eddy of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; a sister, Marjorie Hancock of Franklin; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Steve M. Atkins; a brother; and a sister.
