It appears from John's marriage record that John was born to an unwed mother since the name of the father is not listed. Also, his mother Deliah (Lila) was listed as being single at her death.

From "Clarke Co Marriages 1887-1925" by Pat Duncan:

Date of Marriage: 14 January 1892
Marcus, John L.; s/o ___ and Lila Marcus; 27y; single; farmer; b. & res. Loudoun Co., VA;
m. 14 Jan 1892 at Clarke Co., VA to Bemusdaffer, Sallie; d/o ___ & Amanda Wiley; 26 y; widow; b. Loudoun Co., VA; res. Clarke Co., VA; (off) not given; p. 6

It is believed that "Levi Marcus" that is listed on John's death certificate as a father is an error. Levi was John's grandfather who died about 1853. The name Levi has been carried down to John Levi's son Raymond Levi, Sr., and then to his son, Raymond Levi, Jr. also.

From the Loudoun Discovered, Communities, Corners & Crossroads by Eugene M. Scheel, Volume Four on page 79:

I read where David "Davey" Marcus ran a mill at Scotland, near Round Hill, a place they called Scotland back in the day and that he was quite a trombone player and that all the Marcus' were musical. When I read about him being musical, I knew that "Davey" probably was connected to our family, but I along with many others have not come across a David Marcus. The author also mentioned that his sons, Ray and Towny helped their father at the mill. Due to a situation between John and Mr. Daniel Moatz, John was offered by Moatz $1.00 per mile for John to move away. There was obviously competition between the two men. So "Davey" moved to Charles Town, WV. It is mentioned that that the mill was torn down by 1920.

Note: I spoke with Eugene Scheel and he found in his notes that the above recollection was provided by Frank McDaniel in the 1970s and that Frank worked at the "mill" with "Davey". I noticed that Frank McDaniel was a boarder with Daniel Moatz and his family in 1920 in the Jefferson District and on Frank's WW1 registration signed in 1917 he is employed by Daniel Moatz. Frank's real name is Carl Franklin McDaniel.

Support that "Davey" is John Levi Marcus:

1900 Census: Mr Gilead District - John's occupation is listed as a Miller
1910 Census: Mt Gilead District - John is the proprietor of a Handle Factory; his sons are listed working at the factory too (if we are translating the factory name correctly)

1917 WW1 Draft Registration for son, Raymond shows that his address is Charlestown, WV and single and employed by his father

The birth record for John's son Townsend shows Scotland as his place of birth in 1896 which would correlate with this time era.

John lived in the same community as the rest of the musical Marcus family. I remember my father talking about Townie Marcus also.
