The son of William & Elizabeth (Pfaff) Anderson, in 1850 the family was living in Lower Windsor Township, York County, Pennsylvania, but moved to Ohio ca. 1851. In 1860, he was a laborer living with and/or working for the John Rourk family in Springfield, Clark County, and is in the 1863-65 draft registration still residing in that town.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted September 2, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Clark County, Ohio September 25 as a private with Co. F, 44th Ohio Infantry. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer and on January 4, 1864, and transferred to Co. F, 8th Ohio Cavalry, although it is not certain whether he re-enlisted before or after transferring. He honorably discharged at Clarksburg, West Virginia, July 30, 1865. On August 14, 1865, he applied for a disability pension and received it. In the 1890 Veterans' Schedule, he listed only the service with the 44th Ohio while his tombstone lists only the service with the 8th Ohio Cavalry.

He married Lydia A. Ellwein; August 26, 1865, in Clark County, Ohio, and fathered Lissie (b. @1866), Mary Catherine (b. 08/09/68 - married John E. Wilson), Bertie May (b. 07/03/72), George Weitzel (b. 03/07/75), Charles H. (b. 05/10/77), and Carrie Pearl (b. 06/02/81 - married Harry T. Smith). He returned to York County ca. 1868 but about a year later relocated to Perry County where he lived the rest of his life, there joining Newport's Lobaugh Post No. 297, G.A.R.
