NOTE on Martha's first husband Pinckey Cox.
Pinckney had competed for Martha Jane's hand with Tom Davis, son of Thomas Blackburn Davis. Pinckney won out, and by September, 1870, Martha Jane was pregnant with their child. On Sept. 16, there was a "working" at Laban Davis's house. While the men were resting under the trees at the Davis burying ground near Laban's cabin (across the road from the gate leading to Grandpa Draper's), Tom Davis and Pinckney got into a quarrel, presumably over Martha Jane. Tom stabbed Pinckney. Pinckney died there, propped against a cedar stump that Great-grandpa Tom Jeff Draper used to point out in his old age.
Tom Davis ran off and was never heard from again.(some say he ran off to Missouri where his brother William H Davis was living) Pinckney was buried in the Davis burying ground. Martha Jane had a boy, whom she named Pinckney, Jr. Pinckney, Jr. married Annie Morris of the Preston area. Pinckney Jr. died in 1940. Martha Jane later married Joe Griffin and moved away to North Carolina.
