George was born to James Gates and Marcia Westover Gates. He had multiple wifes and many children. In 1852 he married Harriet Hacking, but she lived for less than a year after that.

GEORGE GATES

Salina, March 29, 1897 – George Gates was born December 24, 1811, and died December 10, 1896, at Salina, Sevier county, Utah. He joined the Church, being baptized by Elder Joshua Holdman, August 7, 1837; was ordained a Seventy by Stephen Markham in November, 1842, was with the Prophet and endured many persecutions and drivings of the Saints; came to Utah in Parley P. Pratt's company in 1847; was one of the first to locate at Mill Creek ward; was a faithful Latter-day Saint and leaves one wife, eleven children and sixty-five grandchildren. Brother Gates lived in Parley's Park; moved from there to Corn Creek, and from Corn Creek to Salina, on the re-settlement of this valley, and has lived here ever since. His house has been open to the weary and his table spred for the hungry. He was a well known and highly esteemed by all acquainted with him.
