Jean was one of four children born to Walter Wesley Boykin and Carrie Mae Bennett. She married Enoch James Hassell, Jr. August 31, 1946. Jean was a sports woman, excelling in bowling and golfing. She won many trophies in golf. She was also a rancher, working cattle right along with her husband.

SERVICES HELD TODAY FOR HASSELL, LEGENDARY ATHLETE
Services for Billy Jean Hassell, 74, an avid sports enthusiast and an accomplished golfer, were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Central Christian Church of Childress with the Rev Jim West, pastor, officiating.
Mrs. Hassell died Sunday. Burial was in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Johnson funeral Home
She and her husband, James, were chosen "Old Settlers King and Queen" in 1998. Born Dec 11, 1926 in Collingsworth County to Walter Wesley and Carrie Mae Bennett Boykin, she was a lifetime area resident. The former Billy Jean Boykin and James Hassell were married Aug 31, 1946 in Childress. She was a homemaker.
Interviewed in the living room of their farm home in 1998, the couple reminisced. We first met at the bowling alley and one thing led to another and we have remained in Childress all the years because we like the people and we like the area.
A large trophy case in the Hassell home holds evidence of the numerous tournaments - over 250 trophies won over the years.
Mrs. Hassell played in the Western Lone Star Senior Ladies Golf Association and won championships twice and super senior medalist four times. She had played in the West Texas Women's' Golf Association since 1980.
Mrs. Hassell was regarded in Childress as one of the best golfers, men or women, to ever play at the Childress Country Club, winning the Club championship seemingly every year.
A sports enthusiast, she enjoyed all sports, and was an avid golfer, bowler, horsewoman, an "outdoor lady", and enjoyed square dancing. She was a member and past president of the West Texas Ladies Golf Association. She held membership in the Central Christian Church.
Her parents and sister, Jennie Burrows, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, James Hassell of Childress; a sister, Mae Smotherman of Childress; and two brothers, W. J. Boykin and Troy Boykin, both of Childress.
