Dennis Nelson, 83, Hallock, died Saturday at the Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center in Hallock.

Dennis LeRoy Nelson was born in Hallock, Feb. 18, 1920, the son of Alton and Minnie (Kautz) Nelson. He grew up in Hallock and graduated from high school there in 1938.

During WWII he served with the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945 and was assigned to the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Bennington.

On May 17, 1944 he was united in marriage to Violet Gustafson at Hallock. They made their home in Hallock and Dennis worked in the retail grocery business. In 1950 they moved to Lake Bronson where they owned and operated the L.B. Hartz Store. They returned to Hallock in 1952 and Dennis worked at the Central Lumber Yard. When the lumber yard closed he worked at Gordon's Market for a short time before taking a job as custodian at the Kittson County Courthouse and the Kittson Memorial Nursing Home.

He was a member of the Hallock Covenant Church and served as treasurer for many years.

Family members include a son, Dwight (Nancy) Nelson, Winona; three daughters, Bonnie (Gary) Shostedt, Forest Lake; Pauline (Jeff) Michaelis, Eagan and Jody (Scott) Betlach, Mahtomedi; 10 grandchildren and two great grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Wanda; his wife, Violet who died Oct. 12, 2002 and a half brother, Wilbur.

Funeral services were Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003, 11 a.m. in the Evangelical Mission Covenant Church at Kennedy. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery, Hallock.

Rev. Steve Thompson presided.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Eric Nelson, Zachary Shostedt, Matthew Michaelis, Christopher Betlach, Carl Betlach and Andrew Betlach.

Adamson-Austin-Hughes Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
