Born on a small farm, Northumberland Co., Seymour Township, south of Campbellford, ON, raised on a farm, Kent Co., Rawleigh Township, Merlin, ON, Dr. John L. Foxton was both an ordained minister and doctor.
He received his high school education in Chatham, ON, after which he took a theological course at Cobourg M. E. Collegiate Institute, Cobourg, ON. While in college, he was assistant pastor at Leamington, ON, in 1878, & served the church at Dungannon in 1879. He resigned his pastorate & entered Medical College, Detroit, MI, USA, at the same time serving as pastor of a church in Detroit, MI. After studying two years, he re-entered the ministry and was ordained 17 Sept 1882 as deacon of Detroit Annual Conference. He served as pastor at Indian River, Brown City, Pect and Minden City, MI, USA. He resigned his pastorate, re-entered Medical College in Detroit, MI, from which he graduated March, 1886. Immediately after graduation, John went to Huron, South Dakota, USA, where he was engaged in the practice of medicine until ill health forced him to retire. His office addresses in Huron, SD, were: Over H. Wheeler's Drugstore, 333 Dakota Ave. South; over Burnham, Trevitt & Mattis Bank; Room 1, Reed block; Suite 1 and 2, Jeffris block.
A well-known pioneer physician and surgeon in South Dakota, he served as superintendent of Beadle Co. Board of Health for many years, also as county doctor. He was appointed by Governor Herried as a member of the first Board of State Medical Examiners, serving three years. He also was district surgeon for the Dakota division of the Chicage & North Western Railway for twenty-eight years. John L. was originator of the Chicago & North Western Surgical Association, the first meeting of which was held in the Commercial Club Rooms of Daum's Opera House, during which he presided.
