When Alvina Ruby Hensel was born on April 17, 1917, in Texas, her father, Richard, was 32 and her mother, Rosie, was 22. She married Roland Elley and they had one child together in 1938. She then had four children with Christian Schmidt Sr. between 1945 and 1960. She died on July 22, 2001, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 84. She had a massive stroke. Several years before that she lost her right breast to breast cancer. A few years after that she had a minor heart attack. Her stroke left her not being able to speak or open her eyes. She could move her left hand and she would put her fore finger over her middle finger and rub it over her mouth. To our family that was her making the sign of the cross and giving it kisses. Grandma loved to write poems. There was one she wrote that said "Hold those golden gates open for me Christian, I'm on my way". Grandma is buried at Eden Cemetery in Seguin, Texas.
