Like many Massachusetts towns, Marshfield was quickly swallowed into the patriotic fervor of the American Revolutionary War, leading to many of its residents joining the battle for independence. This included our ancestor, Asa Rogers. Asa's family was already in the process of building war ships for the American military when he enlisted in 1775. He first served as a Private in Captain Crocker's Company, Colonel Thomas's Regiment, and then later served as a Corporal in Captain Stetson's Company. During that same year he fought in fortifying Dorchester Heights. The Fortification of Dorchester Heights was a decisive action early in the American Revolutionary War, which led to the British evacuation of Boston.
Asa Rogers finished his enlistment at West Point under General Putnam. General Israel Putnam was an American army general who fought with distinction at the Battle of Bunker Hill. Although Putnam never quite attained the national renown of famous heroes like Davy Crockett or Daniel Boone and others, in his own time his reckless courage and fighting spirit were known far beyond Connecticut's borders through the circulation of folk legends celebrating his exploits. General Putnam is known for commanding his troops "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes". It was certainly an honor for Asa to be able to spend the remainder of his service with this great man. His son, Asa Jr., followed in his father's foot steps, fighting for the Union during the American Civil War.
