Father of the comedian, Tony Hancock. John Hancock, who was usually known as Jack, was born at 616 Coventry Road in Birmingham. He left school in 1900 and his first job was with a cargo shipping line known as Houlder Brothers, with whom he remained for fourteen years, rising from office messenger to representative. On the 22nd. August 1914, at St. Oswald's Church in Bordesley, he married Lucie Lilian Thomas, with whom he was to have three children. Throughout his time at the shipping company, he had pursued a parallel career as an entertainer, and, in November 1923, made his debut on the wireless. In 1927, largely for the sake of his health, the family moved to Bournemouth, where he became the proprietor of, firstly, the Railway Hotel in Holdenhurst Road, then of the Durlston Court Hotel in Gervis Road. On New Year's Day 1935, however, Jack Hancock was informed that he had lung cancer. He died at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Boscombe, and was buried on the 14th. August.
