Martin's birth name was Boomgaarden. It appears he used the spelling of Boomgarden, with one "A". This can be confusing because there are unrelated families that spell their name with one "A". Martins children also spelled their name with one "A".

Martin was a charter member (one of eleven families) of the German Reform Church, Kanawha, Iowa in 1900. The charter members included several members of the Abbas family and Martin later married Wobbina Abbas Roelfsema. His children from his first marriage, Herman, Peter, Marten, Menno and Elizabeth were five of a group of 8 that were the first baptisms in the church on April 1, 1900.
