Private Thomas Sassaman, a farmer from West Chester, was recruited at age 20, May 10, 1864, and enlisted for 3 years in Company F, 97th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.. He joined his company in Virginia on May 19, 1864 and was wounded in the breast [the next day!] during the action at Green Plains, Bermuda Hundred., Va., on May 20, 1864. He mustered out with his Company at Weldon, N. C , on Aug. 28, 1865.
