He spent two years in the service and was honorably discharged in 1865. He spent a number of years around New York state and was married there. He went from there to Chicago, Illinois where he did carpenter work and fancy stair building. While living in Chicago, he heard from his brother, Loyal H. Rickert, about the good opportunities Oregon had to offer. So he came West and settled on the little place now known as Rickert Road at Hurlburt. He got the acreage from C&C land grant for $2.50 per acre.
A few years later, two other brothers, Mel and Dan Rickert, settled here, Mel at the end of the road joining Elihu's and Loyal's places. Dan settled just over the hill from them, near Art Johnson's place on Loudon Road.
Elihu did a lot of carpenter work in the neighborhood and also worked in Portland many years. He rode his horse to work and back home on week ends. That was the only means of transportation he had at the time. He also carried the mail from Hurlburt to Terry P.O. (now 12 Mile). He belonged to the GAR Post in Gresham and went by horse and buggy.
His first wife, Nellie, passed away a short time after they came West. Their children were Flora, Fred, Edith, Ethel, Roy and Almeda. In 1889 he married Anna D. Hansen, who came here from Norway to visit her sister, Hannah E. Winters of Gresham. Anna was born July 22, 1863, at Fredrickshald, Norway. They had the following children:
Arnie H., 1890 (2 daughters, Margie and June)
