In the earlier years of his marriage, Abram Farrand worked as a mason in Strawberry Point, Iowa, and in the early 1870's moved to Spring Valley, Fillmore County, southeastern Minnesota (to join the Farnsworth family) where he continued working as a mason in this growing railroad town. In 1892, records indicate that Abram Farrand moved his family to Section 11 of the Webster Township, Day County, in the plains of northeastern South Dakota, where he established a 160 acre homestead, which was granted to him in 1889. He farmed and had dairy cattle on this land, although it appears that for a period of time, Abram returned to Spring Valley, Minnesota with the younger members of his family (he was in Spring Valley at the time of the 1895 MN census). Abram returned to his South Dakota land by 1900 until about 1907 when he and his wife Sarah decided to retire in the more salubrious climate of Corvallis, Benton County, Oregon. Their 3 living sons Calvin, Merrill, and James Farrand moved with them to Corvallis, with the unmarried sons Calvin and James living and perhaps supporting the parents.
Abram was remembered by his grandchildren as being a stocky, swarthy man with the large hands of a mason and farmer. He died on June 25, 1927 in Corvallis, and is buried with his son James Farrand in the Crystal Lake Masonic Cemetery in Corvallis, Oregon.
