S.W. Hawkins, 76, died at 10 Saturday night at his home on Maple street from a complication of ailments and heat prostration. Funeral services were held at 10 o'clock Monday morning at the chapel of the Callison & Riggs Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. H.O. Bolin, pastor of the Methodist church, assisted by Rev. Karl McClendon, former pastor of the First Baptist church. Special music was by members of the Methodist choir, with Mrs. V. Price and Mrs. Florence Brooks, singing a duet, accompanied by Miss Clara Ewalt. Burial was in Bluff Cemetery. Active pallbears were H.D. Ewalt, Earl Nail, M.B. Mathews, A.C. DeWese, L.S. Phillips, Elmer Johnson; honorary, Judge John S. Combs, C.M. Watson, J.N. Late, J.M. Hewitt, Jeff Gover, Bert Watson,L.A. Bench, G. D. Lichlyter, J.R. Sturdy, J.L. Powell, Lee Sanders Arthur Melson.
Samuel Wesley Hawkins was born at Ozark, Ark., June 5, 1860, and was a son of Alexander Hawkins and Phoebe White Hawkins, both of Tennessee. His father was killed in the battle of Pea Ridge (Civil War). He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dora Nichols Hawkins and by one son, O.E. Hawkins of Springdale and three daughters, Mrs. Grace Bagby and Mrs. Lillian Hannigan of Tulsa , and Miss Jeffa Hawkins of the home, one grandchild, J.W. Harris, son of Mrs. Bagby of Tulsa. Mrs. Bagby and Mrs. Hannigan arrived Saturday night about an hour before Mr. Hawkins death. He is also survived by one brother, A.C. Hawkins of Little Rock.
Mr. Hawkins and his family moved to Springdale from Huntsville in Feb. 1908. Mr. Hawkins and his son were in the grocery business for two years, and the family later operated the local Arcade Hotel and former Commercial Hotel and were in the hotel business in Rogers in 1917-18. Returning to Springdale. Mr. Hawkins was in the real estate business with Ewalt and Myers until 1921 when he and his son became partners in real estate which continued until death. Mr. Hawkins fell about two week ago near Tontitown and injured his hip and had since been bedfast. Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins were married at Altus November 1, 1885 and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last year. Mr. Hawkins and family lived at Altus and Coalgate before moving to Huntsville and then to Springdale.[The Springdale News - Springdale, Washington County, Arkansas - July 1936]
