ROBERT EDWARD MARLN, JR. Robert Edward Marlin, Jr. Our Marine has gone home on March 23, 2008. Long a resident of San Leandro, Robert was born in Hamilton, Ohio on July 12, 1927. He joined the US Navy at 14 yeas of age and sailed the USS Enterprise during her fabled tour of duty during WWII. Thereafter Robert joined the United States Marine Corps without a break in service and remained on duty for approximately 38 years including tours in China and his last post of many years, Alameda Naval Air Station. In the midst of all that he took time to be a little league coach and lifelong mentor to his sons, a good and active citizen and friend to his neighbors and a loving and devoted husband. He was exemplary of that "Fabulous Generation of Americans", capable, fiercely independent, opinionated and devotedly American. His oft infuriating lack of compromise will be missed. Robert passed away after a final dance with a beloved family member aboard the USS Hornet to the music of the Tommy Dorsey Band. A fitting end to the life well lived! Robert is survived by his wife, Lavinia, his sons Russell, Daryl and Roger and their families. He is also survived by his younger sisters and brothers and their families. Services will be held at Fremont Memorial Chapel at 11:00 am on Saturday march 29th, 3723 Peralta Blvd., Fremont; Interment thereafter at Irvington Memorial Cemetery in Fremont where Robert will rest with Gladys, his wartime sweetheart and beloved Mother of his children.
