OBITUARY: The Manti Messenger, Thursday 27 July 1905:
John H. Tuttle.
After being confined to his bed since last April, John H. Tuttle, one of Manti's
staunchest of old time citizens responded to the final summons at 2 o'clock on the
morning of July 21st 1905.
The deceased was son of Terry and Ellen Tuttle and was born in New York City June 19
1821. His father died when he was five years of age. During his early boyhood days he
learned the turner's trade in a large ship building factory in that city. He joined the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in New York at the age of ?? and went to
Missouri where he experienced the privations and hard ?? to which the members of that ??
were subjected at that time. It was in Missouri that he was married to Miss Sabra
Voorhees on May 14, 1843. They came to Utah and settled at Provo in 1852, and ?? the
following spring moved to Manti where he resided until the time of his death. He had the
misfortune to loose his wife in Oct 1853, they having six children - three of whom
survive him. They are Mary Ellen Stringham, Almira Hall and Luther Tuttle. In early days
he was prominent in the Indian wars and was Captain of Company H. In 1853 he married
Sarah Mills who died on Feb 12 1905, they having no children. In 28 June ? he was married to
Sarah Adeline Butler Allen. who survives him. He was Faithful and constant worker in the Manti Temple since its
opening and was a very enthusiastic church worker. His life has been one worthy of
emulation.
