Charles Quest Was An Early Settler In Butler

Charles Quest was born in Amsterdam, Holland, December 28, 1837. When he was about twenty-one years of age he got leave to come to American, intending to go back to the old country, but finding the United States a place where a young man could prosper he decided to stay. He settled in Illinois.

When the Civil war broke out he joined the Illinois Infantry and served four years of the war, receiving at the close an honorable discharge.

At Effingham, Illinois December 23, 1866, Charles Quest was married to Mrs. Martha A. Boaz.

In the year 1871 Mr. and Mrs. Quest moved to Kansas and settled on Hog creek in Butler county. After years of hardships and trials of the frontier life they moved to El Dorado.

Mr. Quest died December 7, 1912, of apoplexy. He is survived by his wife, Martha Quest, and children, John Quest, of Athena, Oregon, Mrs. Mary J. Bailey of Lents, Oregon; Mrs. Hattie McPherson of El Dorado, and Mrs. Myrtle Vannocker of Bazar, Kansas. Two step-children, Mrs. J.L. McDaniel and Mrs. W.O. Layton of El Dorado.
