Lewis Richard Bird was born 25 July 1870 in Mendon, Utah the son of Kelsey and Eliza Jane Perry Bird. He was the 6th of the family's 8 children; Mary Ann, Charles Alonzo, Eliza Jane, Kelsey Charles, Alonzo William, Sarah Ann and Rosetta. Mary Ann and Charles Alonzo died as infants and Kelsey Charles and Sarah Ann died when young. As a boy he and his brothers helped with the farming and herding sheep. His father was a polygamist and times were very hard for the family. Everyone's help was needed to support the family. He met Martha Ellen Brady in Benjamin, Utah. They married on 27 November 1893. 22 September 1897, they took their 2 young children and were sealed as a family in the Manti Temple. Their children were Lewis Richard Jr, Mary Ellen, William Isiah, Eliza Pearl, Warren Alvin, Charles Edward, and Angus Brady. The oldest five children were born in Benjamin, Utah. The family moved to Idaho in 1902 where William Isiah died and the youngest two children were born. Making a farm from new ground was difficult so everyone learned to help. They planted an orchard, raised a big garden, and Lewis raised bees and sheared sheep to suppliment their income. They also filed on some dry farm ground above Ririe. This required living there part of the year and making improvements. In time they were able to build a new home and enjoy the benefits of electicity and indoor water and plumbing. When the family was grown and on their own, Lewis and Martha were there to help out wherever they could. Lewis died 8 October 1931, possibly from a heart attack from chopping wood. Services were held in the Milo Ward followed by burial in the Rigby Pioneer Cemetery.
