FORMER COMMITTEE WOMAN, MINING INDUSTRIALIST DIES
Private funeral services were held Saturday for former Republican National Commitee woman, Mrs. Florence E. (Effie) Semple, a prominent figure in the Tri-State District mining industry, who died at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Quaker Hill Manor nursing home. The Rev. George F. Ott and the Rev. Paul Wiand officiated the 2 p.m. services Saturday at the First United Presbyterian Church of Baxter Springs. Background organ music was provided by Jeff Nichols. Pallbearers were Howard Cawyer, Kenneth Tucker, Emmanuel Koronis, Kent Warstler, John Hughes and Claude Allgood. Honorary pallbearers were Ivan Chubb, Carl O'Leary, Dr. L. C. Pickrell and Glenn Pruitt.
Born September 7, 1888, in Exline, Iowa, Mrs. Semple 86, moved to Texas while a child and later moved to Oklahoma where she attended high school. In 1914 she graduated from Oklahoma City Business College and moved to this area in 1918 from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Baxter Springs; the Daughters of the American Revolution, of which she was a past regent; the Daughters of the American Colonists of Pittsburg; the Baxter Springs Garden Club and the Inter-City Business and Professional Women's Club, of which she was a past president.
Mrs. Semple, who was honored as Top Citizen of the Year in 1971 at Picher, Oklahoma, served as national committee-woman from 1952 until 1964. She was active in Cherokee County Republican affairs and served as vice chairman of the county Republican Central Committee. She had held mining interests in the area since 1918. Later, Mrs. Semple was involved in the chat processing business after the lead and zinc mines began to play out.
In addition to her business and political pursuits, Mrs. Semple was active in civic affairs in Baxter Springs. She was instrumental in construction of Baxter Memorial Hospital and served as an honorary member of the hospital's Board of Directors until her death. For a number of years, she was a director of the Baxter Springs Golf and Country Club and was instrumental in its development. She was honored by the Baxter Springs Chamber of Commerce during the 1973 Cowtown Days celebration as a special guest during the parade. She also contributed the rock and mineral collection she started while in the mining business to the Baxter Springs Historical Museum.
Mrs. Semple is survived by two daughters, Mrs. William Meek, of Baxter Springs, and Mrs. John F. Hayes, of Hutchinson (Note: These were Ireton grandchildren she adopted, mm); two step-children, Mrs. Virginia Miller of Las Vegas, Nevada and Mrs. Marion Austin of Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren, Mrs. JoAnn Bingham of Las Vegas, Carl Hayes of Joplin, Missouri, James Meek of New Orleans, Louisiana, Shannon Kirkendoll of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Christopher Meek of Fulton, Missouri, Devon Meek Boswell and Miss Chandler Hayes of Hutchinson; one sister, Mrs. Josephine Nussbaum of Placerville, California; and seven great-grandchildren.
