Lyle Howard, son of Howard and Lauretta (Peterson) Gilbertson, was born May 19, 1947, in Stanley. He lived in the Owen-Withee area until the age of 7, when he moved with his family to Minneapolis, where he graduated from high school. After high school, Lyle served three years with the U.S. Army in Germany. He was united in marriage to Deborah Birch on May 31, 1991, in Eau Claire. The couple made their home on their hobby farm in rural Fall Creek. Lyle had attended Chippewa Valley Technical College where received a degree as a certified welder. He was employed for 20 years by Phoenix Steel in Eau Claire as a welder and truck driver. When he took early retirement due to ill health, he was driving semi for Silent Thunder of Chippewa Falls. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith and was a member of Osseo Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he served as an usher. Lyle and Deborah enjoyed raising Norwegian Fjord horses, and was a member of the Midwest and National Fjord Associations. He loved to tinker on old cars and tractors, especially Olivers. He loved his hobby farm, and in addition to his horses, he tried his hand at raising calves, pigs and doing his own carpentry work. With everything that kept him busy, he always had the time to be a wonderful grandpa.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah of Fall Creek; three sons, Todd (Lynn) Gilbertson of Lexington, Ky., Jake Gilbertson of Eau Claire and Shawn (Tracy) Flippin of Byron, Minn.; three grandchildren, Michaela and Alexandra Flippin and Jake Gilbertson; mother, Lauretta Gilbertson of Minneapolis; brother, Gale (Sue) Gilbertson of Minneapolis; three sisters, Linda Maxwell of Zimmerman, Minn., Judy (Vance) Stroad of Minneapolis, Lora (Mike) Epps of Champlain, Minn.
