CAPT. W.A. JOHNSON, FORMER CITY POLICE CAPTAIN, DIES HERE
Capt. William Albert Johnson, 89, of 2507 North B Street, a native of Alabama, he was a resident of Tampa for more than half a century. A former police captain and former city clerk, who died yesterday. He came here from Apopka, Florida in 1895, after his marriage to Mary Alice Shaw.
Mr. Johnson's father, Dr. T. A. Johnson had moved his family from Alabama to Apopka at about the same time that the Shaw family moved there from SC. Dr. Johnson later returned to Alabama.
The deceased served as Tax Collector in Apopka, he was a police captain in Tampa for 12 years, and Tampa city clerk for 23 years.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Alice Shaw Johnson. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. J.Robert Dansby and Mrs Joseph E. Williams, Tampa; Mrs. Iva Tinny, Ozona; Mrs G.G. Prowinsky, St Petersburg, and Mrs. Weber Glazier, Bradenton; three sons, Ray H., Clyde E. and Norman M. Johnson, Tampa; a brother, Mack M. Johnson, Birmingham; a sister, Mrs. Anna M. Williams, Sanford; 22 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock at t he Wilson Sammon Funeral Home.
