Nathan's obituary states: Nathan Barney, who died in Brooklyn, NY on Easter Sunday was born in Walkes-Barre 82 years ago. His father was Nathan Barney, one of the earliest taxpayers in the township of Wilkes-Barre. His childhood and early manhood were spent in this Valley. While quite young he taught in the old Seminary on South river Street, now replaced by the residences of John Hance and E. F. Payne. he taught penmanship among other branches here. Later he was engaged in the coal business at Mauch Chunk, Bergen Point and Brooklyn. George Barney and Mrs. Hannah Densmore of this city are nieces and Dr. Delbert Barney, a grandnephew of the deceased. ( Wilkes-Barre Times: 7 Apr 1902, p. 5)
