Throughout his working years, Walter was employed as a milkman, postal carrier, custodian and a truck driver with the National Guard Transport Group for the 1133rd in Mason City. Walter was a hard worker and a great provider for his family. He attended Wesley United Methodist Church and was a former member of the Moose Lodge, both in Mason City. Walter was an avid Minnesota Vikings football fan, enjoyed western movies especially John Wayne films, black and white war movies and documentaries, Stargate-SG1 and wrestling.
