Sarah was the daughter of Tandy & Elizabeth Creech Kidd. When the Civil War broke out, her father enlisted in the Union Army and served as a Pvt. in Co. E, 14th Ky. Vol. Cav. He survived the war, but passed away around the time of Sarah's birth.
Her mother married Benjamin Franklin Lee on December 8, 1868 in Jackson County. In addition to raising his own children, Mr. Lee helped in the raising of his step-children.

They were accompanied by Sarah's daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. Mr. Spurlin passed away in 1914.
