Rial Lafayette Roberts enlisted as a Private at Panora, Guthrie County, Iowa on 17 Oct 1861 at the age of 21. He mustered in Co L 4th Iowa Cavalry on 25 Nov 1861. Re-enlisted and re-mustered on 12 Dec 1863. Mustered out 8 Aug 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia. Records state he was "wounded in left shoulder."

"While the rest of the family were getting ready their wagons, oxen, and their supplies for the overland trip, it was discovered Roberts' young wife had a mind of her own and she steadfastly refused to go with them. All the members of the family tried to prevail upon her but to no avail. The father, mother, brothers, and sisters all went west and settled on farms in Guthrie County, Iowa."
