Hazel A. Gross, age 85, of Huron, died Saturday, June 7, 2008, at the Huron Regional Medical Center.
Hazel Alice Gross was born November 2, 1922, on a farm northeast of Huron to Andrew and Susie (Hofer) Tschetter. She grew up on the family farm and attended Sunshine School, a one-room school in Iowa Township. Hazel attended Yale High School for two years and graduated from Huron High School in 1942. During this time she worked on N.Y.A., did light housekeeping, and worked at a convalescent home for her room and board. Hazel then attended Business College and worked at Newberry's in Huron.
Hazel accepted Christ as her Savior on Mother's Day in 1942, at the Huron Mission Church with Rev. Joe Wipf as pastor. On July 19, 1942, she was baptized by Rev. Zack Wipf at Ravine Lake in Huron. She became a member of Bethel Church of Yale and taught in Sunday school, Bible school and on Wednesday night. She and Elmer were strong supporters of Bethel Church and James Valley Christian School.
On July 11, 1943, she married Elmer Gross at Yale. They farmed in Iowa Township on the farm where Hazel grew up. Elmer and Hazel celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 11, 1993.
On August 1966, her son, Wayne was in an automobile accident, which left him paralyzed. She gave many years of loving care to him both in her home and as he became independent.
Hazel moved to Huron in 1994, but always enjoyed driving past her old farm and seeing the crops. In July 2005, she moved to Stoneybrook Suites and became a resident of the Huron Nursing Home in August 2007. Hazel was always content wherever she lived, and appreciated when friends and family visited. Her gentle and caring spirit was known by many. She enjoyed keeping up her diaries and scrapbooks with events and activities of people that she knew.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Elmer Gross on October 16, 1993.
Grateful to have shared her life are her four children, Jim (Patty) Gross, of Yale, Dave (Paulette) Gross, of Yale, DeLane (Allen) Wipf of McKinney, Texas, and Wayne (Doreen) Gross, of Circle Pines, Minnesota; eight grandchildren, Mari (Quint) Hofer, Eric Gross, Jonathan (Ranie) Gross, Tim (Sheri) Gross, Rachel (Brian) Fizel, Michelle (Brian) Wanttie, Amber Gross, and Desa Gross; fourteen great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Irene (Lee) Scott, of Wessington Springs, Doris Culver, of Huron, and Jeanette (Owen) Johnson, of Huron.
Her funeral service was Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at the Bethel Mennonite Church, rural Yale, with the Rev. Ray Shepard officiating. Burial was in the Bethel Mennonite Church Cemetery, rural Yale.
