Lorene was born to William Christian and Laura Etta (Bonn) Proenneke. She married Melvin R. Hackard on July 6, 1936 in Wapelo, IA. He preceded her in death on July 10, 1974.

Mrs. Hackard is survived by one son, Richard Hackard of Petersburg, IL and one daughter, Nancy Hackard of Charleston, SC, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one brother, Raymond Proenneke of Hemet, CA, three nephews and one aunt.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and one daughter, Judith K. Sprecher on November 10, 2003.

Mrs. Hackard was a member of the United Methodist Church in Havana. She graduated from Beauty School worked as a beautician in Iowa for several years before she was married.

She was a sister of Dick Proenneke, the naturalist and Dick was a subject of a documentary, "Alone in the Wilderness."

Mrs. Hackard chose to donate her body to science. Burial of her cremains will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Havana.

Hurley Funeral Home in Havana is in charge of arrangements.
