CAME HERE IN LATE FIFTIES

Mrs. Joseph Defaut one of the pioneers who played a successful part in the development of Wolf River, (Algoma) in the years of long ago, died Monday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joseph Fronzo, in Racine.

Mrs. Defaut was in her nintieth year and was born on Carleton Island in the St. Lawrence River, in Jefferson County, N.Y. There she grew to womanhood and wed Joseph Defaut and in the late 50's she and her husband came to Wolf River and made their home. James Defaut a brother of Joseph had arrived here in 1855 and was one of the prominent men of the community, being the first town chairman. Joseph was a carpenter and built several of the first residences in Wolf River. Benjamin Fowles, who is still a resident of this city, was a brother of Mrs. Defaut and had also preceded she [sic] and her husband here.

In 1875 Mr. and Mrs. Defaut purchased a farm near Maplewood and resided their [sic] until about the year 1900 when they returned to this city and 5 ears [sic] later moved to Sturgeon Bay. Mr. Defaut died in April, 1909, and a short time later Mrs. Defaut went to Racine where she has since made here [sic] home with her daughter.

The deceased is survived by two sons--James of Sturgeon Bay and Frank of Sawyer; five daughters--Mrs. Jane Chapek, of Rhinelander; Mrs. George Marr, Sr. of this city; Mrs. Dan Goodwin and Mrs. Joseph Fronzo of Racine and Mrs. William Bacon of Lincoln, and two brothers--Benjamin Fowles of this city and George Fowles of Maplewood.

Accompanied by the daughters from Racine the body reached Sturgeon Bay Wednesday evening and the funeral was held from the home of James Defaut yesterday. Among those in attendance at the funeral from this city were: Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bacon, Mr. and Mrs. George Marr, Sr., Mrs. William Hilton, Mrs. William Bacon, Mrs. Jas. T. Empey and Frank Hurst.
