Sammy Murrah Injured
In Hondo Crash Thursday

Car-Truck Collision
Fatal to Native
Of Del Rio Friday

Jack Murrah Fokes, 31-year-old native of Del Rio, was killed instantly and his cousin, Sammy Murrah, was seriously injured at 2:15 a.m. today 10 miles east of Hondo on Highway 90 in a car-truck collision.

Fokes, son of Mrs. Jack Fokes of Del Rio, and Murrah were returning home from College Station, where they had attended the Texas-A&M football game, when their car was in collision with a cattle truck traveling east from Devine.

Murrah suffered a fractured leg and lacerations about the head. He was taken to a hospital in Hondo. His father, Dan Murrah, and an uncle, C.B. Bushager, left Del Rio early this morning to be with him in Hondo.

Funeral arrangements for Fokes had not been completed at the Doran Funeral home this morning. The body was brought here in a funeral coach and rites will be held here.

Fokes was born May 30, 1926, in Del Rio, son of Jack and Eno Murrah Fokes and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. C.O. Fokes and Mrs. and Mrs. J.R. Murrah, all prominent residents of Del Rio.

He was reared here, attended the local schools and was graduated from the Del Rio High School. He received his degree from Texas A&M College and served with the paratroopers and later with the Army, in Japan and in the South Pacific.

He married Joan Brauer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.D. Brauer of Del Rio, in Corpus Christi in January 1953. The couple resided in Uvalde.

His father, Judge Jack Fokes, died June 17, 1954.

His wife and children, Jackie and Clifford Howard Fokes, had been in Del Rio, Mrs. Fokes returning to Uvalde and the children remaining here with their grandmother. Mrs. Fokes' brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. John Thomas Mayfield, went to Uvalde to be with her and to bring her to Del Rio for the rites.

In addition to his widow, tow children and his mother, a number of uncles and aunts survive, as does his grandmother, Mrs. J.R. Murrah of Del Rio.
