He married Ursula Elizabeth Whiteside (his first cousin once removed) 18 Oct 1851 in Rutherford Co, NC. They had at least four children: Chester, Polly, Charles Martin, and Thomas Piggins. After Ursula's death in 1868, James married Frances McPherson 8 Sep 1869. They had at least five children: Richard McPherson, Frank, Hemphill Prothro, Katherine, and Mary Adelia.
