Although I only knew my grandpa for a short while, he impacted my entire life. I will always remember not being able to visit him in the hospital for Christmas because I was sick. And I will forever remember the few days later when my mom called me into the living room with the rest of the family and told us he was gone.
My grandpa went by his middle name of John. He HATED the name Milo. :) When he was about 14 he ran away from home (Paris, Edgar Co., IL) to live with his great uncle, Howard Traphagan. When he got there he worked for Howard a short time and then went next door to the Loetterle family ( Charles and Emma ). They were looking for work and he was happy to. He had to lie about his age though and say he was 16 because Mrs. Loetterle (or Mammy as she was called) believed in kids being in school.
John eventually got a call from his brother, Melvin, to come to work with him on the roads in Chicago, IL. This brought him to Northern IL and to meeting my grandma.
My grandparents eventually settled down in Woodstock, IL. They owned a large amount of farm land right off Route 47. This was later sold to a developer and all but the land they kept for their house lot was turned into the subdivision, Justice Hill.
