Trevanion D. Lewis was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1839. He enlisted in Company A of the 8th Louisiana Infantry and became a lieutenant on June 19, 1861. Lewis served as the regimental adjutant from 1861-1862. He was promoted to major on May 7, 1862, lieutenant colonel during the summer of 1862, and colonel in October. Lewis was wounded at Sharpsburg, captured at the Second Fredericksburg, on May 4, 1863, and paroled on May 18.

Col. Lewis was killed during this attack on East Cemetery Hill on July 2, 1863. The location where he fell is unknown.

Col. Lewis was buried on the battlefield in an unknown grave. His remains today may be buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia, in the "Gettysburg Dead" section. There is no record of his remains having been identified when the Confederate dead were removed in the 1870s.
