At age 21 he enlisted on August 11, 1862, and was mustered in on September 2, 1862, as a private in Co. K, 101st Illinois Infantry. He was transferred to Co. G on October 1, 1862, and was killed when he was crushed by machinery aboard the ram USS Switzerland.
Unit roster states he was killed near Alexandria, Virginia. Most likely he was in fact killed on the Mississippi River near Alexandria, Louisiana.
