Mrs. Deem was born in Laurinburg but was a longtime resident of Fayetteville.
She was predeceased by her husbands, William McKethan Monroe Jr. and Fred Blaine Deem Jr.
Mrs. Deem was a graduate of Highsmith School of Nursing and served in the Army Cadet Nurse?s Corps in World War II. She later became co-owner of Monroe Insurance and Real Estate and Monroe-Cooper Fertilizer in Fayetteville. She was active in the community and instrumental in founding The Fayetteville Academy. Her love of history and genealogy included her active participation with the North Carolina Museum of History, serving on the board of directors for the Fayetteville Historic Resources Commission, and being a member of the Fayetteville Beautiful Commission, United Daughters of Confederacy, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Cape Fear Valley Scottish Clans Association. She was a charter founder of the Isham Blake Chapter of the Children of Confederacy.
She was a strong advocate for the underprivileged and those unable to obtain healthcare.
She served on the board of directors for the Cumberland County hospital system from 1975 to 1985. She was a member of Highland Presbyterian and MacPherson Presbyterian churches. Mrs. Deem was an active member of the Tartan Club.
She is survived by two daughters, Betsy Monroe Bradshaw and husband Joel and Jane Monroe Pfeffer, all of Fayetteville, and William McKethan Monroe III of Memphis, Tenn.; three sisters, Joan Ramsey of Charlotte, Carolyn Adams of Little River, S.C., and Faye Williamson of Bardstown, Ky.; five grandchildren, Sarah Stewart Bradshaw, Joel Grey Bradshaw Jr., Currie McKethan Bradshaw, Margaret McCall Pfeffer and Daniel Craft Pfeffer.
The family will receive friends at the home of Betsy and Joel Bradshaw, 2816 Millbrook Road, tonight, March 28, 2007, from 6 to 9. A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 29, 2007, in MacPherson Presbyterian Church, followed by a brief graveside service at the church.
