Anchorage resident Hazel B. Sims, 83, died April 5, 2006, of natural causes at Providence Alaska Medical Center. A celebration of life was at First Christian Church with the Rev. Michael Elbert officiating. A reception hosted by the PEO and the Women's Newcomers/Longtimers clubs, both of Anchorage, was held afterward. Her ashes will be spread over Kachemak Bay.

Mrs. Sims was born July 10, 1922, in Duran, N.M., to Howard and Maude Stanger. She spent her early years in New Mexico, Colorado and Texas, graduating from high school in Artesia, N.M., in 1940. After two years of college, Mrs. Sims worked for 30 years at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory as a property manager. After marrying Darrell Sims in 1976, the couple moved to Houston, Texas. Following Darrell's death, Mrs. Sims relocated to Anchorage in 1989. Throughout her life, she has been involved in public service organizations. In Anchorage, she stayed active through playing bridge, involvement in the PEO Club, Anchorage Women's Club, Newcomers/Longtimers, Gourmet Club, as an election coordinator, and as a member of First Christian Church. Her family said: "Hazel loved to entertain, socialize, celebrate the seasons, and have fun. She lived for her bridge games and a multitude of other diverse activities, and was happiest when surrounded by people. Hazel enjoyed seeing new places, stayed current with local and world events, and maintained close, lifelong connections with her three sisters, children, grandchildren and other family members." She was preceded in death by her husbands, Bob Bechtol and Darrell Sims.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Lelland and Becky Tolbert, William and Eileen Bechtol, and James and Rebecca Bechtol; grandchildren, Jennifer Tolbert, and Lynn, Mathew, Sarah and Elizabeth Bechtol; sisters, Louise Livecy, Lucile Thistle and Billie Gillilan; and many nephews and nieces.
