Lloyd B. Dawson

Lloyd B. Dawson, 90, of Greenville died Friday, December 20, 2013 at Baylor University Medical Center. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Monday at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bill Shaddox officiating. Burial will follow at Shady Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Sunday at the funeral home.

Mr. Dawson was born in Cooper, Texas on March 24, 1923. He was the son of Clifford Dawson and Mary Taylor Dawson. He lived in Greenville from the age of 5. He married Billie Davis on December 11, 1942 in Greenville and was a member of First Baptist Church in Greenville.

He was a graduate of Greenville High School and attended East Mississippi College on a football scholarship, playing quarterback. He and his brother owned and operated Dawson Brothers Construction Company in the 1950's, and he was the owner of Dawson Apartments. Mr. Dawson was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving in the Pacific during World War II in action on Makin, Saipan and Okinawa. His company was awarded a Unit Citation for action on Okinawa. He received the Purple Heart on Saipan and Oak Leaf Cluster on Okinawa Throughout the years, he loved sports, especially the Dallas Cowboys, and playing poker with his friends.

Survivors include Billie Dawson of Greenville; daughters, Diane McCutchen and husband, Kent of Greenville, Kathy Lewis of Athens and Jan Hempel of Princeton, New Jersey; grandchildren Mark McHenry, Lori Shaw, Karen Leos, Hadley Hempel, Holly Hempel and Maggie Lewis; six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Gladys Armstrong, Norma Dawson and Elaine Stovall; brothers, Kenneth Dawson, Carl Dawson and W. L. "Bud" Dawson; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Pat and Jewel Wilkins.

Pallbearers will be Mark McHenry, Kent McCutchen, Zachary McHenry, Jimmy Smith, Chad Davis, Shorty Slemmons and H. L. Kent. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Black and Doyle Coffman.
