Mary was the daughter of Nancy M. Smith and Benona M. Hughes.
She was the sister of Bertha V. Hughes (Charles David Smith), Syble S. Hughes (Ores Amboy), Lacy J. Hughes and Clarence E. Hughes.
Miss Hughes married Gilbert Joseph Taylor Nov. 19, 1891. Gilbert was the son of Catherine Butterfield Johnson Taylor and John Abraham Taylor.
Mary and Gilbert were the parents of:
- Mary Alice Taylor born Feb. 10, 1893. Married George O'Dell
- George Logan Taylor born July 1, 1894.
- John Benona Taylor born April 26, 1896. Married Gertrude Meyers.
- Ethel May Taylor born Apr. 5, 1898 (m. Louis Earl Aiken)

Mary was preceded in death by their son, Samuel A. Taylor, b. Aug 25, 1902. Samuel passed on Feb. 21, 1905, aged 2 years, 5 months and 26 days. The graves of mother and son share a headstone.
Also preceding her in death was her sister Nora M. Hughes on Feb 19, 1904.

Mary Jane's daughter, Ethel May Taylor (Louis Earl Aiken), born April 5, 1898 in Broughton, Ohio, died in Jackson, Michigan on Dec. 27, 1848.
