Mary was the fifth child of Joseph Blankinship (son of Sylvester) and his wife Amy Ridgway Blankinship. Her mother died a couple of years after she was born. Joseph married Elizabeth Suddeth in 1855 who raised her. After her father's death, she went to live with her sister, Amy "Kate" Hawk and husband A. C. Hawk, where she resided until her death.

She died of inflamatory rheumatism on May 22, 1913, at St. Mary's Hospital in Decatur, Illinois. She was buried in Long Point Cemetery, Niantic, Illinois.

Survivors included her sister, Amy Catherine Hawk, Joseph Clark, Effie Lamb, Hester Buchanan, Juda Stanseberry and Martin and Wash Clark (children of Nancy Ann Blankinship Clark) and Harvey Bly (son of Martha Jane Blankinship Bly), and half-siblings, Marshall Blankinship and Minerva Blankinship Foster.
